2013 PAAEC Book Award Winners

The Princeton Alumni Association of Eastern Connecticut is pleased to announce that eighteen book prizes were awarded this year (plus several Honorable Mention certificates) for excellent essays. Thirty three students from fifteen secondary schools in New Haven, New London, and Middlesex counties applied for the award by submitting an essay. The year's essay was to be written about any one of the following Princeton alumni, the three most recent Associate Justices appointed to the U. S. Supreme Court, and how the specific alumnus/a fulfills Princeton’s (unofficial) motto, “Princeton in the nation’s service and in the service of all nations”:
  • Samuel Alito, Princeton class of 1972
  • Elena Kagan, Princeton class of 1981
  • Sonia Sotomayor, Princeton class of 1976
The awarded prizes were the form of one of various books written by Princeton professor and Nobel laureate Toni Morrison. Each book was signed by professor Morrison (directly to each student!) and inscribed with a PAAEC placard. Guilford High School juniors Megan Burke, Daniel Freedman, and Charlotte Killiam received awards presented by Scott Conover '56 (a 1952 alumnus of Guildford High School!). Scott reported, "The winners and the faculty were quite impressed with the award of Toni Morrison's book."

John Armstrong '67, of Madison, presented awards to Adam Boey and Cecilia Bueno at Daniel Hand High School. Rebecca Armstrong '74 awarded a prize to Molly Donahue at Portland High School, and Barry Nann '57 did the same for Sarah Dinovelli at Robert E. Fitch High School and for Unni Kurumbail at East Lyme High School.

Robert E. Fitch High School junior Sarah Dinovelli (third from left) poses with her award, surrounded by her parents. Joining Sarah are PAAEC president Barry Nann (second from right); Fitch assistant principal Peter Bass (far right); and Sarah's brother Ben (far left), who won the same prize in 2011 and just completed his freshman year at Princeton.

Below is a list of this year's award recipients. The PAAEC would again like to congratulate all the winners, and hopes that all of these outstanding students, supported by their teachers and administrators, are destined to enjoy further academic achievement.
